Integrated Statistics is looking for a Scientific Data Analyst to work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) is the research component of NOAA NMFS for the Northeast Region. NEFSC has an ongoing research program to synthesize, analyze, and report ecosystem data and conduct integrated ecosystem assessments (IEAs) for the Northeast United States continental shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (LME). 

The Scientific Data Analyst will assist NEFSC scientists with ecosystem data processing and analyses, and the dissemination of ecosystem data. Data types range from climate and oceanographic information such as global climate and regional model outputs, archived satellite Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and ocean color (OC) data, observations from ongoing hydrographic, plankton, fisheries, and protected species surveys, and social and economic data related to Northeast U.S. Coastal communities.

The Scientific Data Analyst will develop standardized data summaries, documentation, and reporting, and may assist with ecosystem modeling tasks using the data (initialization, parameterization, calibration and validation). The main tasks include:

  1. Working with Ecosystems Dynamics and Assessment Branch staff to produce annual State of the Ecosystem reports.  This will include collecting relevant ecosystem indicator data from across the NEFSC, synthesizing indicators, and producing the reports in Rmarkdown.
  2. Developing automation procedures for collecting ecosystem data where possible.
  3. Developing and coordinating the creation of a new web interface for disseminating ecosystem data.
  4. Assisting with other IEA related projects as needed. 

Qualifications

The Scientific Data Analyst must possess knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in data handling, analysis, synthesis, reporting and documentation.  Additional knowledge related to database construction and maintenance, computer programming, website development, fisheries, and marine ecosystems is desirable.  Specific skills and experience include:

The position is expected to be full-time for one year, working on-site in Woods Hole. The rate of pay is approximately $30/hr and the position is eligible for the benefits described on the Integrated Statistics website.
