Integrated Statistics is looking for a Biological Laboratory Technician to work in support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) located in Sandy Hook, NJ.
This position provides assistance in the planning, implementation, and execution of laboratory-based experiments with live marine fish. The technician will work with a group of NOAA laboratory staff on an experimental, hypothesis-testing project on validating eDNA methodologies. The technician will assist NOAA researchers in implementing, maintaining, sampling and benchtop analyses associated with fish eDNA calibration experiments.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Assisting in setting up equipment for seawater laboratory studies.
- Feeding and husbandry of fish used as test subjects in project experiment(s).
- Collecting and processing of water samples from controlled occupancy fish tanks.
- Recording and organizing data collected.
- Preparing tables, graphs, and summary reports.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to do physical work in indoor/outdoor spaces and possible on a sea-going vessel.
- Valid, clean driver’s license.
- Availability to work weekends and/or shift schedules.
- Ability to work with live specimens in a high humidity, hot or cold environment (seawater laboratory).
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in fisheries, aquaculture, or closely related biological science.
- Meticulous record-keeping and organizational skills.
- Experience using common software applications (e.g. Word, Access, Excel, web-browsers, etc.).
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in design of experiments with live aquatic animals.
- Ability to enter, organize, summarize, and document data collection; to perform analytical and elementary statistical software on collected data, deduce results, and communicate research findings.
- Skilled in organizing, tracking, and documenting research activities; support tasks (supply needs and expenditures); and assisting NOAA personnel in a multi-tasking environment.
- Understanding of the potential importance for fisheries of eDNA methodologies.
- Experience with husbandry, and general maintenance of marine fish adults and early life-stages in a captive, culture-based environment.
- Experience with water sample collection and filtration for eDNA analyses.
The position is full-time, with an expected duration of 4-6 months. The rate of pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position is eligible for the benefits described on the Integrated Statistics website.
