Biological Laboratory Technicians Needed

Integrated Statistics is looking for three Biological Laboratory Assistants to work in support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) located in Milford, CT. There are three separate projects in: Analytical Chemistry, Flow Cytometry, and Microbiology. Please scroll down as the jobs are listed alphabetically. Your application will be considered for all. The positions are all full-time, with an expected duration of 4-6 months, the rate of pay for all of them is $21-22/hr, and they are eligible for the benefits described on the Integrated Statistics website.

Analytical Chemistry: analysis of archived oyster soft tissues and shells for carbon and nitrogen contents.

Responsibilities

Dry and prepare oyster tissue and shell samples for elemental analysis.

Operate Elemental Analyzer according to protocols provided.

Record and organize data collected.

Prepare tables, graphs, and summary reports.

Qualifications

Ability to do physical work in indoor spaces.

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related subject.

Demonstrated laboratory experience, to include proficiency with volumetric chemistry techniques.

Meticulous record-keeping and organizational skills.

Experience using common software applications (e.g. Word, Access, Excel, web-browsers etc.).

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Knowledge of quantitative analysis practice preferred.

Experience working with an elemental (CHN) analyzer preferred.

Familiar with basic oyster anatomy preferred.

Flow Cytometry: provide assistance with two flow-cytometric applications for a project on Kelp meiospore sorting and oyster cell analysis by flow-cytometry.

Responsibilities

Assisting with sorting sugar kelp meiospores to establish gametophytes for collaborative study on kelp breeding.

Assisting with analyzing metabolic rate of oyster hemocytes to compare diploids and triploids in Virginia field sites.

Preparing kelp spore samples for sorting.

Assisting with operation of a sorting flow-cytometer to accomplish single-cell isolations of kelp spores.

Collecting hemocyte samples from oysters.

Preparing oyster-cell samples for reading on an analytical flow-cytometer.

Analyzing cytograms according to protocols provided.

Recording and organizing data collected.

Preparing tables, graphs, and summary reports.

Qualifications

Ability to do physical work in both outdoor and indoor spaces.

Bachelor’s degree in on of the biological sciences.

Laboratory experience, including demonstrated proficiency with volumetric chemistry.

Willingness to participate in overnight field-sampling trips of up to one week duration.

Meticulous record-keeping and organizational skills.

Experience using common software applications (e.g. Word, Access, Excel, web browsers, etc.).

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Knowledge of flow cytometry preferred.

Experience working with macroalgae in lab and/or field settings preferred.

Familiarity with basic oyster anatomy preferred.

Microbiology:provide assistance with experiments to refine the relationship between in vivo fluorescence of phytoplankton suspensions and true chlorophyll a concentration in lab and field settings.

Responsibilities

Prepare volumetric suspensions of microalgal cultures.
Quantify cultured and natural microalgae using compound microscope and flow cytometry.
Collect natural seston on filters during field sampling programs.
Extract filters with organic solvents.
Determine chlorophyll concentrations in extracts using fluorometer or spectrophotometer.
Record and organize data collected.
Prepare tables, graphs, and summary reports.

Qualifications

Ability to do physical work in indoor spaces.
Bachelor’s degree in microbiology or related biological science.
Laboratory experience, including demonstrated proficiency with volumetric chemistry.
Meticulous record-keeping and organizational skills.
Experience using common software applications (e.g. Word, Access, Excel, web browsers, etc.).
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Knowledge of basic microbiology strongly preferred.
Experience working with microalgae in lab and/or field settings preferred.
Familiarity with use of spectrophotometers and fluorometers for quantitative analysis preferred.
