Biological Laboratory Technician - Fisheries Flounder Needed

Integrated Statistics is looking for a Biological Laboratory Technician to work in support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) located in Sandy Hook, NJ.
This position provides assistance in the planning, implementation, and execution of laboratory-based experiments with live marine fish (Winter flounder). The technician will work with a group of NOAA laboratory staff on an experimental, hypothesis-testing project on fish habitat, assisting NOAA researchers in designing, constructing, and implementing laboratory experiments on effects of modified habitats (sedimentation, hydrostatic pressure) on critical life-stages of Winter flounder.
Responsibilities
- Assisting in setting up equipment for seawater laboratory studies.
- Feeding and husbandry of fish used as test subjects in project experiment(s).
- Collecting and processing of fish and sediment samples.
- Recording and organizing data collected.
- Preparing tables, graphs, and summary reports.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to do physical work in indoor/outdoor spaces and possibly on a sea-going vessel.
- Clean driver’s license.
- Ability to work weekends and/or shift schedules.
- Ability to work with live specimens in a high humidity environment (seawater laboratory).
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marine Biology or related biological science.
- Ability to enter, organize, summarize, and document data collection; to perform analytical and elementary statistical software on collected data, deduce results, and communicate research findings.
- Experience in design of experiments with live aquatic animals.
- Meticulous record-keeping and organizational skills.
- Experience using common software applications (e.g. Word, Access, Excel, web browsers, etc.).
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Skilled in organizing, tracking, and documenting research activities; support tasks (supply needs and expenditures); and assisting NOAA personnel in a multi-tasking environment.
- Understanding of the importance for fisheries of essential fish habitat.
- Demonstrated experience with spawning, husbandry, and general maintenance of marine fish adults and early life-stages in a captive, culture-based environment.
- Familiarity with methods for evaluating effects in embryos, larvae, and young juveniles of fish habitat manipulations (e.g., dissolved oxygen, sedimentation, hydrostatic pressure) and response variable protocols (image data collection, live animal handling and preservation) for research studies of marine and estuarine fish species.
The position is full-time, with an expected duration of 4-6 months. The
rate of pay is $31-33/hr. The position is eligible for the benefits
