Marine Geology Research Assistant Needed
Apply Here
Integrated Statistics is looking for someone to work with USGS (United States Geological Survey) at the WHCMSC (Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center) in Woods
Hole. The person provides technical support for the Law of the Sea (LOS) project, which seeks to understand sediment thickness and geologic
processes on the U.S. Atlantic, Arctic, and Gulf of Mexico continental
margins. Geological, geophysical, morphologic, and oceanographic data
are collected and applied to the quantification of sediment thickness
and their relation to the evolution of the continental margin.
Background
The LOS project conducts research on the geology and geophysics of the
U.S. continental margins. The purpose of this research is to define and
justify the location of the outer limits of the extended continental
shelf beyond 200 nautical miles as defined using sediment thickness and
geology in Article 76 of the Convention on the Law of the Sea. Defining
the outer limits of the extended continental shelf can provide the U.S.
with certain sovereign rights over the sea floor and sub-seafloor. This
project is part of a larger federal interagency task force on the
extended continental shelf that is administered by and funded through
Department of State, the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration, and the Department of the Interior.
Recent research includes field programs and analysis in the Arctic,
Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans, and analysis of legacy data from the Gulf
of Mexico. This position is primarily to support the analysis of data
from the Atlantic, Arctic, and Gulf of Mexico regions.
Scope of Work
The work will span a broad range of assignments in data analysis and
support for limited field and more commonly office studies, literature
searching, outreach activities, and other miscellaneous duties normally
performed by project scientists. In the office, work will include
processing and analysis of data, literature searching, drafting of
sections of technical reports, preparation of outreach materials, and
development and documentation of databases. In the field and the
office, the work will involve collection and analysis of seismic and
related geological and geophysical data. This work is inherently
interdisciplinary, and involves cooperation with other USGS research
centers, other Federal agencies, and contract government researchers.
The work requires adherence to applicable safety and security
regulations.
Qualifications and Skills
- Professional knowledge of the principles, theories, practices, and
established methodologies of geology, geophysics, and Earth Systems Science, equivalent
to the attainment of a bachelor’s degree.
- Professional knowledge and skill in the use of computers.
- Knowledge of techniques used in data analysis, including GIS and related databases.
- Experience in multiple operating system environments (Windows,
Mac) and familiarity with software such as Microsoft Office and ArcGIS.
- Ability to interact with interdisciplinary research teams,
communicate verbally, write sections of reports, and maintain
comprehensive and legible notes in an organized fashion.
- Knowledge and competence in technical library research.
- Knowledge of applicable safety regulations and procedures in field and office work.
Deliverables
The primary deliverables for this work are products resulting from the
processing and analysis of seismic and other geological and geophysical
data collected or developed in databases by this project, as well as
products resulting from literature searching in support of project
research. These products will include maps, graphical output,
derivative analytical products such as correlations, trends, and
model/data comparisons, and written summaries of project results or
background information from the literature. Particular deliverables for
field work and laboratory work will include the collection of necessary
data and the keeping of accurate and complete written notes. Outreach
deliverables will include preparing materials for communication with
both scientist and non-scientists.
The rate of pay is $17-18/hour, depending on experience. The initial
period of performance is one year. The position is full-time, with the
benefits described on the Integrated Statistics website.
