Integrated Statistics is looking for a Fish Biologist to work in support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) located in Sandy Hook, NJ.
This person will assist in developing and conducting research projects within the Fisheries Ecology Branch (FEB). The research supports finfish aquaculture experimentation at the Sandy Hook facility, which houses 11 large seawater laboratories and a 35,000 gallon experimental tank. The person is also expected to support research on shedding and decay rates of environmental DNA to support fisheries assessments. Some of the work may require field sampling from research vessels.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Contribute to discussions about projects to support aquaculture and fisheries assessments.
- Design and conduct experimentation in seawater labs. and perform data analysis and summary.
- Assist with writing grant proposals.
- Contribute to design and construction of a new recirculating aquaculture system.
- Conduct research to support finfish aquaculture.
- Conduct research to better understand the dynamics of environmental DNA.
Required Qualifications
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work well in a team setting.
- Bachelor's degree with four years of work experience, or Master's degree with two years of work experience. The degree and work experience must be directly related to aquaculture.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using software tools such as Microsoft Office and statistics software.
- Experience in communicating research activities in peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Educational background in aquaculture sciences.
- Experience and knowledge of marine fisheries.
- Experience in seawater laboratory experimentation.
- Experience in designing and/or construction recirculating aquaculture systems.
- Experience in investigations of environmental DNA.
The position is full-time, with an expected duration of approximately 6 months. The rate of pay will be $25-30, depending on experience and qualifications.
