Integrated Statistics is looking for a Ecologist to support the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office's Habitat Restoration work in Anchorage, AK.
The Ecologist will assist USFWS staff who are working with grantees to accomplish USFWS-funded habitat restoration projects. The projects include replacement of undersized culverts, dam removals, and riparian restoration. The team includes biologists, engineers, hydrologists, and other roles in the planning, development, and execution of restoration projects.
Duties
The Ecologist duties include developing agreements, conducting on-site surveys and inspections, tracking expenditures, and meeting reporting requirements for the habitat restoration projects that the US Fish and Wildlife Service is funding in Alaska. Specific duties include assisting USFWS staff with:
- Financial Assistance agreement development.
- Financial Assistance agreement tracking.
- Tracking financial expenditures associated with Habitat Restoration projects.
- Logistical support for field projects.
- Tasks using GIS, such as quantifying upstream habitat.
- Entering project details into the national Fisheries Information System database.
- Performing on-site construction inspections of projects during the summer construction season (typically June-August), with these tasks:
- Verify that the materials and methods used in construction meet the requirements in the drawings and specifications provided by USFWS staff.
Communicate and follow up with oral and/or written reports, including pertinent pictures, regarding the progress of the project to project partners, engineer and stakeholders.
- Monitor and document compliance with project permit conditions, environmental issues and water discharge requirements.
- Witness and document the contractor's quality control activities including inspections and testing. Training will be provided on reading construction drawings and specifications.
- Act as field assistant to professional engineer, hydrologist or biologist using equipment such as flow meters, total station and auto level equipment to collect topographic, hydrologic, geomorphic, and habitat data during the field season (typically May to October).
- Other duties may include tasks such as assisting USFWS staff with logistical support
and material prep for Streambank Restoration and Fish Passage Workshops,
annual reporting, and/or new project proposal development for grant
applications.
Travel & Training
Travel to remote sites around the state of Alaska could be required during the field and construction season, with site visits typically ranging from one to three days. Travel for offsite technical training could also be required with offsite training typically lasting less than two weeks.
Specific training will be required as a prerequisite to providing specific services; for example boat safety, bear/gun safety, and CPR/first aid.
Training will be provided in the specific means and methods used
for the data collection, design, layout and construction of stream
restoration and fish passage improvement projects in the Alaska Habitat
Restoration program.
Qualifications and Skills
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field of study.
- Ability to read, understand and verify implementation of construction drawings and specifications.
- Experience using spreadsheets, word processing, database, file management, and email software in a technical environment.
- Experience working in GIS.
- Desire to work in a team atmosphere to confer with the design team to meet project goals for fish passage, habitat restoration and infrastructure.
- Willingness to telework and be flexible with scheduling when necessary to meet deadlines.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating so that you get along with partners, regulatory personnel, contractors, co-workers, and management.
- A valid driver's license.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds and carry equipment over rough terrain.
- Ability to work under difficult conditions. For example, to walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders, and navigate steep, brush and hazardous terrain for up to 10 hours a day.
