Integrated Statistics is looking for a Communications Specialist to work with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC).
This person will assist in developing and disseminating communications materials regarding marine science accomplishments and activities, and assist in the preparation of communications activities conducted in the Ecosystems and Aquaculture Division (EAD), Habitat Ecology Branch (HEB), Fisheries Ecology Branch (FEB) and more generally activities at the NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center lab in Sandy Hook, NJ.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Drafting, or assisting in the drafting of, communications materials (e.g. articles, brochures, posters, social media and web content, press releases and other hand-out materials highlighting the laboratory and marine science.
- Assisting with further development of online outreach and inreach material for the public and staff.
- Assisting in updating information on the EAD, HEB and FEB webpages.
- Supporting the work of the NEFSC Communications Working Group.
- Assisting with planning and coordination of public events (e.g. annual open house, school tours and programs, and participation at other venues)
- Working with the NEFSC Social Media manager to highlight the work being done at the laboratory
- Supporting the educational activities conducted at the laboratory
Required Qualifications
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work well in a team setting.
- Bachelor's degree with four (4) years of experience, or master's degree with two (2) years of experience; degree and experience must be directly related to communications, marketing, new media, public relations, or a similar field.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using communications tools such as Microsoft Office applications, Adobe (Illustrator, Photoshop and other similar software products) web site management and social media tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Educational background includes biological sciences, communications or marketing.
- Specific experience in communicating activities and accomplishments in marine biological, fisheries, or aquaculture industry or in research.
- Customer service experience and working with the public.
- Creative, self-motivated, and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Work experience in communicating research activities and accomplishments via popular outlets such as newspapers, social media, videos, etc.
The position is full-time, with an expected duration of approximately 12 months. The rate of pay will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Writing samples are required. The position is eligible for the benefits described on the Integrated Statistics website.
