Integrated Statistics is looking for a Data Management Technician
to support the US Fish and Wildlife Service, working with the Inventory
and Monitoring (I&M) Branch of the National Wildlife Refuge System
(NWRS) in Alaska. The NWRS is the world’s premier system of public lands
and waters set aside to conserve America’s fish, wildlife, and plants.
The I&M branch supports NWRS data management and natural resource
planning, ensuring the long-term integrity of data products that can
inform sound management decisions for Alaska refuges. This position will
be responsible for updating the NWRS species database for Alaska
refuges, supporting data management for I&M planning processes,
assisting staff in developing data management plans, writing
archival-quality metadata records for natural resource data, and
training NWRS staff in data management best practices.
DutiesThe Data Management Technician assists with data management for Alaska I&M and refuges. The specific duties include:
- Working with biologists to update and quality control a database that catalogs species presence on Alaska refuges.
- Supporting data management for I&M planning processes.
- Working
with biologists to write archival-quality metadata records for data
generated from Alaska NWRS inventory and monitoring surveys.
- Providing
support for biologists developing data management plans for I&M
surveys and reviewing data management plans for completeness and
accuracy.
- Training biologists in data management best practices.
The Data Management Technician produces these deliverables:
- A vetted species list for each Alaska Refuge.
- Organized data and documents for I&M planning processes.
- Project and product metadata records for Alaska refuge surveys.
- Archival-quality metadata records for products generated from Alaska refuge surveys.
Qualifications and SkillsThe Data Management Technician must possess:
- Certification
or training in data management, and its application to natural resource
scientific data (work experience may be substituted).
- Demonstrated skills in managing data products generated from field biology projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife management, natural resource management, environmental science, or related field.
- Demonstrated skills in data management, QA/QC, and data entry.
- Demonstrated metadata development skills.
- Demonstrated skills in implementing data management plans for natural resource surveys.
- Excellent attention to detail in managing data.
- Strong organizational skills, particularly in terms of file management.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team, but also be a self-starter.
- Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Knowledge
and/or experience of data management, input, and QA/QC in relation to
FWS field biology projects in Alaska is highly desirable.
- US citizenship or Green Card.
- Ability to pass a government-administered background investigation in order to be granted access to government IT systems.
The
position is full-time. It starts 11/1/21 and is expected to last until 10/31/22. The rate
of pay is $24/hr. The position will begin with a period of remote work
to accommodate pandemic restrictions.
