Integrated Statistics is looking for a Gear Research Technician to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fishery Service (NMFS).
The Gear Research Technician works with the Gear Research team, which develops, tests, and evaluates fishing gear modifications to help reduce bycatch of sea turtles, marine mammals, and other protected species.
The Gear Research Technician assists with research on ropeless fishing gear, working directly with the fishing industry and other organizations to test gear modifications on commercial fishing vessels. The technician communicates operational aspects of the fishing gear and receives user/tester feedback to help evaluate and improve experimental gear and approaches.
Duties
- Talking with, listening to, and working with fishermen is the key responsibility. Outreach duties include communicating effectively with partners in the commercial fishing industry, assisting with events, conferences, training, and fielding questions from all stakeholders.
- Helping to develop, deliver, and troubleshoot experimental gear, exchanging information to improve development and deployment of bycatch solutions.
- Assisting with field studies and evaluation of potential solutions to reduce bycatch.
Qualifications
- At least one year of full-time experience in working with the commercial fishing industry.
- Excellent communications skills, including the ability to communicate with varied audiences, such as scientists, fishermen, and the general public. Ability to communicate both verbally and using written materials (including visual presentations).
- Understanding of scientific method, experimental design, and implementation under challenging conditions. Experience in conducting gear research project on commercial fishing vessels is desired.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team.
- Strong time management skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and strict timelines.
- Ability to enter data into a computerized data entry program while at sea on a commercial fishing vessel. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Ability to comply with EO 14042.
- A Bachelor’s degree in fishery science, marine biology, or a closely related field. Fisheries experience may substitute for all or part of the educational requirement.
- A valid driver's license.
- Fishing vessel safety training is desired.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job, which include:
- Spending up to two (2) weeks on board a commercial fishing vessel, working up to 16 hours per day.
- Providing necessary medical clearance and required safety training certificates before research activities.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a rolling vessel in a safe manner.
- Corrected 20/20 vision.
- Ability to work on small boats for periods of up to 12 hours at a time.
- Ability and willingness to stay at hotels for up to three (3) weeks at a time.
The position is full-time for one year. The rate of pay will depend on skills and experience, and the position is eligible for the benefits described on the Integrated Statistics website. The position requires travel, and field work, mostly within the Northeast coastal states but also extending to the Mid Atlantic region.
