Fisheries Biologist - Cooperative Research Needed

Integrated Statistics is looking for a Data Analyst to work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Narragansett, RI. The Fisheries Biologist works with the Northeast Cooperative Research Program (NCRP), which fosters collaborative research among the commercial fishing industry, marine science, and fishery management communities in the Northeast.

The Fisheries Biologist participates substantively in all phases of research investigation, including problem definition, planning, execution, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of findings, including presenting results at scientific and/or related meetings when necessary. Tasks include:

Manipulating and helping to maintain fisheries related databases.

Analyzing data using appropriate statistical, mathematical, graphical or other quantitative techniques.

Authoring or assisting in producing fishery related reports and publications. Participating in industry meetings, scientific symposia, workshops and conferences in order to support and present NOAA mission critical projects.

Reviewing reports, products, and associated documents. Assisting in developing outreach materials, including user manuals, troubleshooting guides, newsletters and articles on Cooperative Research accomplishments, challenges and objectives.

Performing regular visits to fishing ports.

Potentially serving as the lead investigator or team member on various research projects, performing sorting/processing of fish and other living marine resource specimens or samples for their use as biological data, performing field-based studies to collect fisheries related data and samples, providing technical assistance at sea and ashore to coordinate training and equipment deployment aboard commercial vessels, troubleshooting electronic logbooks, collecting data, and maintaining scientific protocols that ensure that research results meet research objectives. May also provide logistical and at-sea support for industry participants in cooperative research and electronic reporting programs, including : recruitment with community leaders; program introductions; port visits to identify set-up requirements and constraints; equipment deployment and training; troubleshooting support and data collection; and participating in research cruises as necessary.

Maintaining documentation that supports data processing

Auditing and processing GPS, temperature, and fishing effort data

Assisting with developing/maintaining metadata

Writing and/or maintaining data dictionaries

Updating Public Access for Research Results (PARR) inventory

Monitoring vessel participation in various projects

Documenting problem data

Querying Oracle databases to track vessel participation, create summaries, graphs, tables, charts, or data visualizations for leadership and outreach documents.

Analyzing data using appropriate statistical, mathematical, graphical or other quantitative techniques.

Fulfilling internal and external data requests.

Qualifications

B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology or a closely related field.

CPR/ First Aid and Safety-At-Sea training.

At least two years of paid work experience in the field of fisheries research, or in a related area or of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master’s degree, or an equivalent graduate degree.

Experience in working as a researcher or member of a research team performing research on commercial fisheries or related resource management.

Specific and demonstrated experience in these areas:

Documented SQL and Oracle programming experience.
Demonstrated experience analyzing complex (i.e. fisheries) data sets.
Demonstrated experience writing scientific papers for publication.
Demonstrated experience in preparing summary reports.
Demonstrated experience in identification, collection, sorting and processing of fish samples.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Strong ability to work closely with team members.

Proven ability to work collaboratively with members of the commercial fishing industry, including working at sea.

Demonstrated ability to work independently with little supervision to accomplish tasks.

The position is full-time, and the rate of pay is $26-28/hr, depending on experience and qualifications. The position is eligible for the benefits described on the Integrated Statistics website.
